A young Nigerian, Dr. Reason Ebubechukwu Onya, has achieved a remarkable academic feat by graduating with straight A’s from IM Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University in Russia. His outstanding performance earned him the institution’s highest academic honour—Valedictorian—as well as the prestigious Gold Diploma and Gold Medal awarded for academic excellence.
Dr. Onya, 22, becomes the first Nigerian from Rivers State to attain such recognition from one of Russia’s most respected medical institutions. His achievement has been widely celebrated across academic and cultural circles, hailed as a source of pride for Rivers State and a shining example for aspiring Nigerian students around the world.
Throughout his medical training, Dr. Onya maintained a flawless academic record, distinguishing himself with discipline, perseverance, and unwavering commitment. He hails from the Ekpeye Kingdom and was born into the Izuorgwu Ellah the Great of Ekpeye family of Edhiwulu kindred, Ubio community, in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.
Reflecting on his journey during his valedictory speech, he credited his success to consistent hard work and personal discipline. “I learned how to wake up early, attend my classes with full commitment, and always give my best. Thank you so much for all you have taught me,” he said.
He acknowledged the diverse backgrounds of his peers, stating, “We faced numerous challenges. We came from different parts of the world, but today we are united in one goal—to serve as doctors and medical professionals, to provide care to those in need, and uplift communities globally.”
Addressing younger generations, he offered an encouraging message: “To my dear colleagues, let this not be the peak of our achievements, but a springboard for a lifetime of impact. To young boys and girls in Nigeria, Egypt, Russia, and across the globe: wherever you may be watching this, know that nothing is above you. You are the best.”
Dr. Onya’s accomplishment stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration to Nigerian youths and a proud moment for his home state, exemplifying what can be achieved through determination and excellence.
