The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to incorporate advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), into the training of its officers as part of efforts to align with global trends in national security and modern warfare.
Outgoing Flag Officer Commanding, Headquarters Naval Training Command, Rear Admiral Istifanus Albara, made this known during a send-forth parade held in his honour at the Command in Ebube, Eleme, Rivers State.
Rear Admiral Albara emphasized that modern warfare is increasingly technology-driven, making it imperative for the Navy to prepare its personnel accordingly. He revealed that the Command had revised its training curriculum to integrate technology into both operational and personnel management frameworks.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for their unwavering support and for funding the training of officers in contemporary warfare techniques.
Albara noted that the Command is undertaking several initiatives to ensure a conducive working environment for officers and ratings. According to him, “Technology drives everything, and there is a new term gaining ground—artificial intelligence—which will shape future operations. In that regard, we have started implementing the use of technology in our training to prepare our personnel for AI-driven warfare and operations.”
He added, “Through our curriculum review and various capacity-building efforts, we are incorporating technology not only in our operations but also in the management of our men. These initiatives are geared towards creating an environment that enhances operational efficiency and professionalism.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Albara, who assumed office in February 2024 as the 39th Flag Officer Commanding, said he successfully deployed strategies to reinvigorate professional naval training in line with recent technological acquisitions. He also carried out a comprehensive review of the Navy’s training policies and introduced several maritime and leadership development programmes for officers and ratings.
He highlighted progress made in securing accreditations and affiliations for Naval professional schools, enabling graduates of the Nigerian Navy to compete favorably with their counterparts globally. “I am pleased to note appreciable gains toward the accreditation and affiliation of Nigerian Navy professional schools and courses. These efforts ensure that our graduates are globally competitive after their service to the nation. Statutory requirements are being met, and pragmatic curriculum reviews have been undertaken to address current realities,” he said.
Rear Admiral Albara also noted that during his brief tenure, the Command hosted several high-profile events, including the 2024 Sunset of the Nigerian Navy, various sporting activities, and notable infrastructural developments.
Rear Admiral Robert Obeya has been appointed as the new Flag Officer Commanding, becoming the 40th to hold the position at Headquarters Naval Training Command.
