The federal government has dismissed claims that Nigerian citizens in Tehran, Iran, have been abandoned amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
In a statement released on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, described the reports circulating on social media and some news platforms as misleading and unfounded. He stated that the Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran remains fully operational and committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all Nigerian nationals in Iran.
“The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been drawn to misleading and unfounded reports circulating on social media and certain news platforms that the Embassy of Nigeria in Tehran, Iran, has abandoned Nigerian nationals and departed the country due to the ongoing crisis with Israel,” the statement read.
“The Ministry categorically debunks these allegations and assures the public, particularly Nigerian citizens in Iran, that the Embassy remains operational and dedicated to their welfare. However, the consistent bombing in Tehran has disrupted normal work schedules and necessitated remote working for staff.”
The Ministry also disclosed that arrangements are being made with the Government of Armenia to facilitate the evacuation of Nigerians through Yerevan due to the ongoing hostilities.

Additionally, the Embassy has asked Nigerians in Iran to stay in touch with their local community coordinators and to download the Iranian messaging app, eitaa, where they can join a dedicated Nigerian group for regular updates.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the evolving situation closely and taking all necessary measures to safeguard the interests of Nigerians wherever they may be.
