Two people were reported dead following sporadic gunfire around the outer perimeter of the Ahoada East Local Government Council on the night of Monday, June 23, 2025.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen on motorbikes attempted to infiltrate the council secretariat, prompting security operatives stationed at the facility to open fire in an effort to repel the attackers. The exchange reportedly led to the deaths of two security personnel.
Emeni Ibe, President of the Orashi National Congress (ONC), told journalists that the incident occurred between 8 and 9 p.m. and confirmed that a local vigilante member and a police officer were killed in the attack. He added that the violence caused panic among residents, leading business owners to shut down abruptly as Ahoada town and its environs became deserted.
Ibe appealed to the youth of the local government area to lay down their arms and embrace peace, while also urging security agencies to intensify efforts to protect the community.
As of the time of reporting, the Rivers State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
It would be recalled that on Friday of the previous week, unknown youths reportedly stormed the office of the Ahoada East LGA Administrator at the council secretariat, assaulted him, and forced him to sign a prepared resignation letter. The Rivers State Police Command condemned that act in a statement issued on Sunday and called on those it identified as responsible to report for questioning.
