Presidency: Akume Urges Northern Politicians to Delay 2031 Presidential Bid, Commends Tinubu’s Progress
George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has called on politicians from the Northern Region to postpone their presidential ambitions until 2031.
Speaking at a two-day Interactive Season on Government-Citizen Engagement in Kaduna, Akume emphasized the importance of patience and unity in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation under the theme “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity,” the event provided a platform for dialogue between citizens and government officials. Akume praised the foundation for facilitating discussions aimed at strengthening governance, democracy, and national development.
He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has been in office for just over two years, yet has already achieved significant and fundamental milestones.
Akume stated, “Tinubu promised impartial governance, and he has upheld that pledge. We should support those doing well so they can accomplish even more. Despite misinformation in some media outlets, Tinubu has strengthened our security architecture, revitalized agriculture through progressive initiatives, and reduced food prices, thereby enhancing food security and infrastructure nationwide.”
He expressed confidence that Tinubu’s leadership is guiding Nigeria toward a prosperous future: “The president is on track to lead us to the promised land. I urge politicians from the Northern Region to wait until 2031 before considering their presidential ambitions. Do not join groups that may hinder the progress Nigeria has achieved.”
Akume concluded, “The removal of fuel subsidies has freed up funds at the sub-national level, enabling government to undertake major projects and deliver meaningful dividends of democracy for all citizens.”
