The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has assured residents of adequate security ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Speaking during a press briefing at the Police Headquarters, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, August 26, CP Adepoju emphasized that security arrangements for the polls will be strictly handled by the police and other conventional security agencies, making it clear that vigilante groups will not be part of the election duty.
“We have deployed adequate security manpower to ensure the election is free, fair, and credible. Police, as the lead agency, will take charge, and all areas have been fortified. We are warning those who may want to cause trouble to refrain,” he stated.
The Commissioner disclosed that the police have been carrying out raids in blackspots and making arrests of criminal elements ahead of the election to guarantee a peaceful atmosphere. He also revealed that a joint security situation room has been set up to receive information from the public during the polls.
“All necessary government and sister security agencies will participate. We have enough manpower and are confident there will be no major issues. But if anything arises, we are prepared to contain it,” Adepoju assured.
The police boss further announced a restriction of movement across the state from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, noting that only those on election duty or essential services will be allowed to move with proper authorization.
He appealed to residents to comply with the restriction order and conduct themselves peacefully, stressing that the police remain committed to providing a secure environment for credible elections.
