The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has announced a restriction of movement in Ahoada East and Khana Local Government Areas as part of security measures for the forthcoming bye-election.
The restriction will begin at 12:00 midnight on Saturday and remain in force until 6:00 p.m. the same day.
The bye-election for the Ahoada East and Khana State House of Assembly constituencies is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026. According to the police command, the directive is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, free, fair, and credible electoral process.
CP Adepoju said there will be heavy deployment of security personnel across the two local government areas to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to safeguard lives and property before, during, and after the election.
He added that security operatives will be positioned at strategic points, including polling units and major roads, to curb violence, electoral malpractice, and other criminal activities that could disrupt the exercise.
Residents have been urged to comply strictly with the movement restriction, avoid unnecessary gatherings around polling centres, refrain from carrying weapons or suspicious items, and promptly report any activities that could threaten the peace of the election. They are also advised to conduct themselves in line with electoral laws.
The police commissioner further called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to shun violence and abide by the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant regulations. He warned that anyone who violates the order or engages in acts capable of disturbing public peace will be arrested and prosecuted.
Parents and guardians have also been advised to caution their children and wards against being used to foment trouble during the election.
The police command reassured residents of its commitment, alongside other security agencies, to provide a safe environment for eligible voters to exercise their civic rights without fear or intimidation.
