Utsev Prediction of 20% Reduction of Crop Yields by 2050 Due to Climate Change

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Utsev has warned that climate change may reduce crop yields by up to 20% by 2050.
Utsev disclosed this at the 31st Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Thursday.
Utsev emphasised the importance of managing water resources sustainably to mitigate the impact of climate change on global food systems.
He cited the United Nations’s estimates that 29% of the global population lacks clean water, with Africa being particularly vulnerable.
To address these challenges, he said his ministry has made significant progress in various areas, including water supply, water quality, sanitation and hygiene, Irrigation and Food Security, and the Clean Nigeria campaign.
The Minister expressed optimism that the 31st Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources and Sanitation will produce actionable policies to support these.
On his part, the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, highlighted the state’s commitment to food security and sufficiency, recognizing water resources’ critical role in achieving this goal.
He noted that the state has established a standalone Ministry for the WASH sector and implemented initiatives to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
The governor also expressed concern about the plight of abandoned dams in the state, including Nkari and Ibiono Ibom, which were once envisioned to drive agricultural growth and economic prosperity.
He welcomed the federal government’s assurance to reactivate the dams and pledged the state’s support.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, Rt. Hon. Sada Soli said Nigeria is blessed with abundant water resources, but effective management remains challenging.
He hoped the National Council would address the water sector’s challenges, including flood management, resource allocation, and public awareness of water safety and hygiene.
He said the National Assembly is committed to water resources development and management through improved budgetary allocations and oversight.
Soli reassured the Minister that the 10th House Committee on Water Resources and the National Assembly are ready to play their roles in ensuring the implementation of the decisions taken at the National Council.
