Lagos Assembly Crisis: Speaker Meranda Downplays Obasa’s Occupation of Office

The embattled Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has dismissed concerns over the occupation of the Speaker’s office by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, maintaining that the situation does not prevent her from carrying out her duties.
Speaking on Sunday through her Special Adviser on Information, Victor Ganzallo, Meranda reaffirmed that Obasa’s presence in the office does not undermine her legitimacy as the Speaker.
Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, returned to the Assembly complex last Thursday. He arrived around 9 a.m., accompanied by security operatives, and proceeded to hold a plenary session with only four lawmakers—a move widely rejected by 35 other members of the House.
The former Speaker was ousted over allegations of abuse of office, financial misappropriation, and misconduct, triggering a leadership crisis that continues to deepen in the 10th Assembly.
Despite his removal, Obasa maintains that he remains the rightful Speaker, insisting that the process leading to his impeachment was unconstitutional and unprocedural.
