Edo NHRC Laments Increase In Domestic Violence

The Edo state coordinator of the National Human Rights Commision (NHRC), Olumide Dosumu, has raised awareness on the alarming rate of domestic violence despite sensitisation campaigns.
He explained that the issue of domestic violence tops the chart amongst other forms of human rights abuse received by the commission.
African Law Foundation (AFRILAW) in Benin organised a one-day Palm Oil Supply Chain Human Rights Training Workshop for CSOs and Media organisations to address the growing concern.
Speaking on “Human Rights Law and Protection of Community and Indigenous People’s Rights in Nigeria,” Dosumu noted the commendable efforts civil society organisations have been making to sensitize the people against domestic violence. However, he urged the CSOs to double their budget so that drastic reductions in domestic violence can be achieved in the state and in the country at large.
On the part of the Executive Director, AFRILAW, Mr Okereke Chinwike, while speaking on the topic; “Responsible Oil Palm Chain and Protection Of community / indigenous and Human Rights Defenders in Nigeria”, maintained that the civil society organisations are charged with advocating for the rights of those who have been abused in any of the communities where multinational oil Palm companies operate.
He urged the Civil Society Organizations as well as media Organizations to carry out their duty in ensuring that these companies carry out their corporate social responsibility (CSR) to their host communities.
