Emamuzo Iboma, Lagos

An explosion at the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday evening triggered panic among motorists and residents. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. and was captured in multiple videos shared on social media, showing thick flames rising from the scene.

Confirming the explosion, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, stated that emergency responders were already at the site. “Some explosion. Awaiting Preliminary Report. LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team is at the location,” Okunbor told The PUNCH via WhatsApp.

In an official statement, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, provided further details. She revealed that the fire resulted from a tanker accident involving a 30-tonne DAF gas truck navigating the expressway when the crash occurred, leading to an explosion.

“The fire, which erupted in front of a Redeemed Church, quickly spread to the church, an adjacent bungalow, and four vehicles,” Adeseye stated. “Firefighting operations are ongoing to prevent further damage.”

As of the time of reporting, no casualties had been recorded, while emergency teams continued efforts to contain the blaze. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
