The Edo State Government, via its Ministry of Mining, has confirmed its commitment to supporting mining host communities throughout the state by implementing the community development agreement (CDA) with key stakeholders.
This information was shared in Benin City by the State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, during a meeting with leaders from the Okpeila Community.
He stated that the administration led by Sen. Monday Okpebholo aims to ensure that the CDA agreements signed by companies reflect the desires of the host communities. He also emphasized that these agreements will be closely monitored to guarantee full compliance and prioritize the people’s interests.
Hon. Ijegbai stressed the important role of the state government when communities and companies sign CDAs to protect the rights of all individuals involved.
He assured that the state government will not tolerate any form of mistreatment of its citizens by companies operating in their communities.
Leaders from the Okpeila Community, including High Chief Tunde Ajie and Prince Anthony Oba, voiced their concerns regarding the CDA with BUA.
They thanked the Commissioner for organizing the meeting, which allowed them to share their issues.
According to the community leaders, their concerns included a lack of proper representation, internal disagreements, and feelings of marginalization, among other things.
The Awoyemi Ruling House and the Imiokpe Kindred requested separate CDAs with BUA to manage their funds independently. Imiokpe Community pointed out problems such as poor road conditions, insufficient water supply, and unreliable electricity, especially compared to the BUA Camp, which they noted has 24-hour electricity.
Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle, the Director of Mining, expressed his gratitude to the community members for accepting the invitations from the Ministry. He mentioned that this is the beginning of a positive relationship between the Ministry and the Community.
They talked about plans and reached agreements to make sure everyone abides by the rules and avoids any problems. This effort is part of the State Government’s promise to create a successful Edo State.
