World Earth Day: A Call For Environmental Justice

By Prince Woke

As people around the world commemorate World Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025, the Greenleaf Advocacy and Empowerment Center has called for environmental justice.

Nne Umoren, the Group’s Coordinator, stated in an interview with our reporter that the group is calling for bold action to combat environmental destruction, systemic pollution, and climate injustice.

She said the theme for this year World Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics”.

” we raise our voice for communities in the Niger Delta, the Middle Belt, and other regions suffering the devastating impacts of extractive industries and environmental neglect.

” is not just a date on the calendar—it is a daily reminder of the urgent need to defend our ecosystems and empower frontline communities.

“We cannot talk about saving the Earth without addressing the systems that continue to exploit it and the people who are paying the price.Environmental justice means clean air, safe water, and healthy soil for all—not just for the privileged few”,Nne Umoren said.

The organization further called on the government to prevent corporate environmental infractions and

preserve local communities by upholding environmental laws, encouraging community-led climate action and training in green skills, and implementing a just and equitable transition to renewable energy.
