The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the death of Mr. Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level student of Computer Science, who was reportedly killed during a shoot-out involving personnel of the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army near the university campus.
Although no security agency has yet taken responsibility for the fatal shooting, the university has confirmed that the deceased was a bona fide student of the institution.
In an official statement signed by Dr. Sam Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, the university expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late student.
“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.
The university further appealed to students and members of the university community to remain calm and allow relevant agencies to carry out their investigations without hindrance.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students and staff, assuring stakeholders that necessary steps would be taken to ensure justice is served and such incidents are prevented in the future.
