Abe Slams Governor Diri Over Wike’s Bayelsa Rally

Chairman of the Great Green Wall Commission, Senator Magnus Abe, has strongly criticised the Bayelsa State Government for its reaction to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike’s potential visit to the state.
In a statement published on his verified Facebook page, Abe expressed his disappointment over the excessive reaction from the Bayelsa State Government, elders, courts, and community leaders, all of whom have been holding meetings and press conferences to dissuade Wike from visiting. This intense opposition, Abe argued, is unwarranted and unnecessary, given the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens to move freely within the country.
Abe questioned the justification for the strong stance taken by the Bayelsa State Government and its people, pointing out that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every Nigerian, including Wike, the right to move freely within the country.
He emphasised that if Wike decides to visit Yenagoa, he will do so, just as Governor Diri frequently visits Port Harcourt and Abuja.
According to Abe, the constitution is clear on this matter, and there is no need for such a strong reaction.
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is unequivocal on the right of citizens to move freely within the country.
“It is, therefore, surprising that the Bayelsa State Government and its people are reacting in such a manner,” Abe said.
The senator suggested that a simple phone call between Governor Diri and Minister Wike could have prevented the current situation and unnecessary expenses.
He called on leaders in the South-South region to adopt a more cooperative and collaborative approach, emphasising the need for improved communication and effectiveconflict resolution.
“A simple phone call between Governor Diri and Minister Wike could have resolved the issue amicably,” Abe said adding: “It is unfortunate that the Bayelsa State Government and its people chose to react in such a manner, rather than seeking a peaceful resolution.”
Abe advised the Bayelsa State Government to save the money spent on anti-Wike press conferences and court cases and redirect it towards benefiting the people.
He believes that the resources wasted on this controversy could be better utilized to address the needs and concerns of the state’s citizens.
“The Bayelsa State Government should focus on addressing the needs and concerns of its people, rather than wasting resources on unnecessary controversies,” Abe stated.
