The Health Of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) on Thursday, February 26, 2026, hosted an interactive book reading session examining the relationship between Nigeria’s political history and environmental degradation.
The event, held on February 26, 2026, at the organisation’s office in Benin city, featured former lawmaker, Journalist and activist Hon. Abdul Oroh who shared insights from his nonfiction work, ‘Demonstration of Craze.’
During the session, Oroh reflected on Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democracy and how political decisions over the years have influenced environmental management and citizens’ behaviour.
Drawing from his experience as a journalist and public servant, Oroh recounted several incidents in communities affected by environmental crises, highlighting the human cost of political and policy failures. He stressed that governments play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges and in managing tensions that often arise in resource affected communities.
According to him, successive administrations in Nigeria have failed to adequately protect both natural resources and the people who depend on them. He argued that weak accountability structures have contributed to widespread public apathy, forcing many citizens to focus on survival with little regard for long-term environmental consequences.
Oroh urged participants to become more actively involved in political processes, noting that meaningful change can only occur when citizens learn from past mistakes and demand greater accountability from leaders.
Also speaking at the event, the executive director of HOMEF, environmental activist Dr Nnimmo Bassey, emphasised the role of art and culture in driving social and environmental change.
Bassey noted that creative expression can be a powerful tool for addressing ecological challenges and raising awareness about environmental justice. He encouraged participants to explore artistic platforms for advocacy while remaining engaged in civic and political processes.
