COVID-19 Variant XEC: NBMA, Others Take Proactive Steps to Checkmate Its Spread into Nigeria

The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) said it has implemented proactive measures in conjunction with other stakeholders to control the latest variant of the COVID-19 virus.
The agency, in a statement on Monday by its spokesperson, Gloria Ogbaki, stated that though the latest variant of COVID-19, known as XEC, was not yet in the country, efforts were already being made to detect and handle it early.
The statement read: “The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) wishes to inform the public that a new variant of the COVID-19 virus, known as XEC, has recently been detected in some countries. There have been no confirmed cases of the XEC variant in Nigeria. While the government remains free of this new variant, the NBMA is committed to taking all necessary precautions to safeguard public health and prevent its potential spread into the country.
“As part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Nigeria remains protected from emerging biosecurity threats, the NBMA is working closely with relevant stakeholders to monitor and assess the situation. Proactive measures, including heightened surveillance at borders, airports, and other points of entry, are being implemented to detect potential cases promptly.
“We will continue reinforcing our national vaccination and public health response strategies.
“In light of this development, the NBMA is issuing the following public advisory to ensure continued safety:
“Stay Informed: Please rely on trusted health authorities for accurate information regarding COVID-19 and any emerging variants.
“Misinformation can lead to confusion and jeopardize public health efforts.
“Adhere to Preventive Measures: Continue to practice the preventive measures that have helped curb the spread of COVID-19, including wearing masks(N45), practicing good hand hygiene, maintaining physical distancing where possible, and ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces.
Get Vaccinated: We strongly encourage all eligible individuals to receive booster shots. Vaccination remains one of the most effective means of preventing severe illness and complications from COVID-19.
“Monitor Symptoms: If you experience any symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of taste or smell, seek medical attention immediately and follow the guidance provided by local health authorities.
“Cooperate with Health Authorities: In the event of any suspected or confirmed cases of the XEC variant, we urge the public to cooperate fully with health authorities in reporting cases and adhering to quarantine and isolation guidelines.”
The statement further said: “NBMA continues to prioritize biosecurity and biosafety and is committed to protecting Nigeria from potential public health threats. We will continue to provide updates as necessary and ensure that all measures are in place to respond swiftly to any developments.
“We call on all Nigerians to remain vigilant, adhere to public health guidelines, and trust in the collective efforts of our national health infrastructure to safeguard the wellbeing of all citizens.
