The Edo State Government has addressed recent misinterpretations surrounding comments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding the visit of former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, the government clarified that the remarks were not intended as a threat to Mr. Obi or any other political figure but were a reminder of the importance of adhering to established security protocols during visits by high-profile individuals.
The statement emphasized that, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, Governor Okpebholo is constitutionally obligated to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
His concerns, the government explained, centered on the need for coordination and proper security arrangements during events that could draw large crowds or significant media attention. It warned that bypassing such protocols could create unnecessary security risks, both for the visiting dignitaries and the general public.
The clarification comes amid rising security challenges across Nigeria, including targeted attacks on religious figures. The Governor’s comments also touched on the need for discretion in public giving, particularly within faith-based institutions, noting that highly publicized acts of generosity can inadvertently expose such organizations to danger.
Citing both intelligence briefings and biblical teachings, he urged for a more discreet approach to charitable acts, referencing the scriptural counsel in Matthew 6:2–4.
The state government dismissed any attempt to politicize the Governor’s remarks and cautioned against drawing parallels with past instances of politically motivated actions by other leaders—such as the controversial detention of Nasir El-Rufai during a visit to Anambra State, allegedly under Mr. Obi’s administration.
Governor Okpebholo reiterated that Edo remains open and hospitable to all well-meaning Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation. He urged mutual respect and cooperation, especially in ensuring that visits and public engagements follow due process for the sake of public safety.
“We will continue to welcome everyone, but public figures must align with the state’s security protocols to ensure their safety and that of our citizens,” the statement said.
