The Edo State Government has restated its commitment to promoting homegrown initiatives and grassroots economic empowerment through strategic public-private partnerships.
This assurance was given by the Edo State Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Anthony Okungbowa Esq., during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) Microfinance Bank to his office at the Government House, Benin City.
Dr. Okungbowa emphasized that Governor Monday Okpebholo is firmly committed to locally driven development strategies, adding that the proposed collaboration with LAPO represents a progressive step toward enhancing the state’s public sector and boosting financial inclusion among civil and public servants.
“Our Governor is very unique. He believes in homegrown systems—how he runs government, empowers people, and structures the civil and public service. That principle has always guided him. This is why initiatives like LAPO, which began here in Edo, deserve priority, visibility, and prominence,” Dr. Okungbowa stated.
He assured the LAPO delegation of the state’s support, stressing the importance of offering competitive financial products that meet the needs of civil servants. “We will support this venture to ensure its success. Yes, there are many financial institutions, but LAPO stands out. It has a good story, and I believe it will deliver in a unique way,” he added.
The Head of Service also noted that LAPO’s Edo origins are a source of pride and a reason to trust its capability in delivering sustainable services. He commended the organization’s founder for his values and integrity, which he described as exemplary for all public workers.
“When LAPO comes on stream to offer services, we know the quality that went into building it. LAPO has been a leader in Nigeria’s microfinance industry. I know the founder personally—his work ethics and integrity are qualities every worker should emulate,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of LAPO, the Head of Communication, Mr. Oluremi Akande, expressed gratitude for the state’s warm reception and reaffirmed LAPO’s commitment to supporting grassroots communities and civil servants in Edo.
“LAPO is a household name in Edo State. We are proud of our roots here and the transformative leadership of the state government. This visit is to reintroduce our business through your office and make civil and public servants aware of our loan products, which are affordable and tailored to support their well-being,” Mr. Akande said.
He highlighted LAPO’s wider contributions to social development, noting that the organization has awarded scholarships to over 3,000 individuals and provided vocational training to more than 1,500 beneficiaries, many of whom are from Edo State.
Mr. Akande concluded by emphasizing that partnerships like the one being proposed are vital to sustaining public sector growth and improving the welfare of workers through accessible financial solutions.
