The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots development in key areas, including prioritising Security, Infrastructural Development, and economic empowerment across the state’s eighteen Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Journalists in Benin City, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe emphasized the importance of the third tier of Government in promoting security and enhancing the well-being of citizens.
He further announced that the Okpebholo-led administration is committed towards creating a secure environment that will attract both Local and International investors and stimulate a fertile ground for economic exchange.
“The people at the grassroots voted for this administration, and we have no excuse not to provide them with security. The Governor’s number one agenda is security and that responsibility extends to the Local Government Chairmen, who are the Chief Security Officers of their respective Councils”. The Commissioner stated.
He maintained that, as part of efforts to enhance development, the Government is placing an emphasis on capital projects that directly impact the citizens of Edo State, including the provision of clean water, road construction, sanitation in public spaces, and electrification projects.
He also noted that the Local Government Chairmen have been charged with implementing these initiatives to ensure visible progress at the grassroots level.
He further reiterated the State Government’s position in promoting Agricultural Development, urging Local Government Councils to take the fore front in reviving farming as a means of boosting food security and economic growth.
“In addition to promoting large-scale farming, the Government plans to support smallholder farmers and market traders”. He said.
“Mr. Governor is saying everyone must go back to farming. The only way to achieve this is through the Local Government Councils. We must prioritize projects that will improve the lives of our citizens. We expect to see accessible roads, potable water, security, electricity, and support for farmers, including soft loans for market traders”. He said.
Dr. Lucky Eseigbe further revealed that environmental hygiene remained a top priority, with a directive for Local Government Councils to improve on waste management in markets and public places most especially.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader five-point agenda, which focuses on Security, Agriculture, Food sufficiency, Education, and Healthcare.
As the State Government revitalized efforts towards strengthening governance at the grassroots, assured that the Ministry would continue to supervise and support Local Government Councils in executing capital projects that would uplift Edo residents and drive sustainable development.
