The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has responded to a disruptive incident at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, involving renowned Nigerian musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam 1, and a ValueJet Airlines pilot.

In a statement released on Wednesday, FAAN confirmed that initial investigations showed Kwam 1 was preparing to board a morning flight to Lagos (Flight VK 201). Despite multiple warnings from security personnel and the flight crew, he attempted to carry an unidentified liquid substance onboard.

FAAN stated, “In accordance with international aviation security standards, including Nigeria’s NCASP and ICAO Annex 17, liquids over 100ml are not permitted through security unless medically necessary and declared. The passenger was informed but reportedly refused to comply.”

The authority explained that during boarding, a security officer asked Kwam 1 to step aside for clarification. He allegedly refused and spilled alcohol from a flask—later confirmed to be alcohol—on the officer. The flight captain intervened but encountered similar resistance. After boarding was completed, the aircraft door was closed.

The statement further noted, “The passenger then moved to the front of the aircraft and refused to leave despite repeated requests. He was eventually escorted away by the AVSEC crime unit for further investigation and was later released.”

FAAN emphasized its commitment to safety and operational integrity, stating that it will not tolerate actions that compromise security, regardless of the individual’s status. The incident is still under investigation, and those responsible will be held accountable under the law.
