The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has partnered with the Edo State Youth Parliament to support the girl child in achieving her full potential through an initiative themed, “From Fear to Fierce; Empowering the Girl Child.”
The collaboration was highlighted during the Parliament’s engagement with the Ministry at its premises in Benin City. The Commissioner, Chief Bisi Idaomi, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien, commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with the Ministry’s mandate to uplift and empower every girl child in the state.
Chief Idaomi emphasized the importance of encouraging girls to embrace leadership roles, make informed decisions, and understand their rights. She acknowledged the significant strides made by the Ministry in empowering the girl child, adding that more women are now taking central roles in leadership across various sectors. This, she said, reflects the Ministry’s firm commitment to amplifying the voices of women and girls, ensuring they are heard, valued, and respected.
She further stressed the role of mentorship in the empowerment process, stating, “The leaders of tomorrow start today. So, when you catch them young at this age, they will do exploits and they will become wonderful in the future.”
In her remarks, the Deputy Speaker of the Youth Parliament, Hon. Ohangbon Lisa Ebuwa, expressed appreciation for the impactful work of the state government in advocating for the protection of the girl child and in the fight against gender-based violence.
Hon. Ohangbon outlined the core goals of the initiative, which include educating young girls about their rights and safety, while raising awareness about gender-based violence and early exploitation. She stressed the importance of working closely with the Ministry and called for its endorsement and technical support to ensure the success of the initiative.
