The Edo Civil Society Organisation (EDOCSO) has supported Governor Monday Okpebholo’s anti-cultism crusade.
Following a peaceful protest led by its Coordinator General, Comrade Omobude Agho, the protesters stormed the Government House in Benin City to express solidarity with the government’s intensified actions against cult-related crimes.
Addressing government officials, Agho praised the governor’s resolve and reaffirmed EDOCSO’s readiness to partner with the state in eradicating cultism.
“We are here to declare one hundred percent solidarity with the Edo State Government’s ongoing fight against cultism,” Agho said.
He further elaborated that the organisation is actively educating the public about the anti-cultism law to eliminate claims of ignorance and ensure compliance.
In a constructive suggestion, Agho urged the government to consider taking over, rather than demolishing, properties linked to cult activities.
“We all detest cultism because of the harm it has inflicted on our youth,” he said. “But beyond punishment, we must think of sustainable solutions.”
The protesters were received by the State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Fred Itua.
In his remarks, Ohonbamu commended the peaceful protest, describing it as a welcome form of civic engagement. He acknowledged that such action provides a platform for dialogue, public participation, and the development of practical solutions.
“The governor wants to maintain law and order in Edo State,” he said. “To do this, certain actions must be taken to show that the governor means business.”
Ohonbamu also emphasised that buildings used for cult-related crimes, often proceeds of fraud or evil acts, must be dealt with appropriately.
“Such buildings can never offer peace to the collective conscience of the society,” he said.
He praised Governor Okpebholo’s boldness in confronting Edo’s challenges and described the administration’s actions as courageous and timely.
“Thank God for your commendation and support,” he told the protesters. “The governor will be encouraged to know the people are with him in this fight to make the state peaceful and secure.”
The Commissioner also highlighted the government’s drive for infrastructure development.
“The governor is in a hurry to develop the state,” he said. “The first flyover is already under construction, the second is on the way, and the third will also be built for the people of Edo.
“With the support of organisations like EDOCSO, the state government’s anti-cultism efforts are expected to make greater impact.
“EDOCSO’s public enlightenment campaign on the anti-cultism law will help ensure residents are informed and take collective responsibility for safety.”
The peaceful protest marked a significant moment in Edo’s anti-cultism drive and demonstrates growing public trust in Governor Okpebholo’s leadership. It also reflects a shared commitment among stakeholders to secure the future of Edo’s youth and build a safer society.
