To tackle insecurity across the country, the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held its 7th Executive Committee Meeting on Tuesday in Maiduguri, hosted by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum.
The primary emphasis of the meeting was to explore effective ways to control the growing insecurity affecting Northern Nigeria. Themed “Enhanced Security as a Panacea for Stability and Development of the North,” the event was formally opened by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who was personified by Governor Zulum.
During his speech, Zulum noted the importance of peacebuilding, agriculture, and youth empowerment as fundamental to the region’s long-term development. He emphasized the urgent need to create meaningful opportunities for young people in the north, stating that while they are full of energy and willing to contribute, many lack the necessary support. “This gap is dangerous,” he warned, urging significant investment in skills training, digital innovation, vocational education, and entrepreneurship to turn youth into productive contributors to society and reduce vulnerability to crime and radicalisation.
He further spotlighted agriculture as the backbone of the northern economy, endorsing for increased efforts to restore farming. “Despite insecurity displacing many farmers, we must secure our agricultural lands and promote modern farming techniques,” Zulum said. He added that Borno State has made strides in this area by improving access to farming inputs, mechanisation, and irrigation systems, with positive results.
Zulum reaffirmed Borno’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and collective growth, expressing confidence in organising the north socially, economically, and physically with unity and resolve.
Meanwhile, Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, stated that the gathering aimed at reinforcing unity among northern states and provide support to political leaders in resolving the region’s pressing issues.
The meeting took part by representatives of the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, and Inspector General of Police. Also in attendant were the Deputy Governor of Gombe State (representing Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya), Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Shehu of Borno Abubakar Umar Garbai, and other traditional rulers from all 19 Northern States.
