The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of sanitation workers by presenting financial support cheques to injured sweepers and to families of those who lost their lives while on duty.
At the presentation ceremony, LAWMA Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, emphasized the agency’s responsibility to protect the lives and livelihoods of frontline environmental workers. He described the sanitation workers as vital to maintaining a clean and livable Lagos, often operating under hazardous conditions.
Gbadegesin noted that the financial assistance forms part of LAWMA’s broader welfare package, which also includes accident compensation, insurance, routine health checks, and safety training. He said the initiative reflects the Authority’s commitment to upholding human dignity and promoting inclusive governance by ensuring that sanitation workers are not left to bear the consequences of work-related hazards alone.
He stressed that social protection for workers is essential and not optional, adding that while LAWMA continues to improve waste management systems across the state, equal attention is given to the wellbeing of the workforce that drives the system.
The LAWMA boss encouraged sanitation workers to remain alert, especially while operating in high-traffic areas or at night, and pledged continuous improvements in safety protocols to reduce on-the-job risks.
The cheque presentation is one of several welfare initiatives designed to promote a safe, supportive, and dignified work environment for all sanitation staff across Lagos State.
