Man Bags 12 Years For Engaging A 17-Year Minor In Sexual Activity
A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced one Alowonle Saliu to 12 years imprisonment for grievous harm and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.
Justice Rahman Oshodi convicted the defendant of a two-count amended charge bordering on grievous harm and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without the consent of a 17-year-old child name withheld brought against him by the state government.
“Alowonle Saliu, you have pleaded guilty to two serious Offences, grievous harm and forcing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. These offences have caused Significant trauma to the victim and her family. I have considered the terms of the plea and sentence agreement, which demonstrate acceptance of responsibility
“I hereby sentence you as follows, on count one you are sentence to 7 years imprisonment, on count two you are sentence to 5 years imprisonment following your plea bargain.”
Justice Rahman Oshodi further added that the sentencing will run consecutively amounting a total of 12 years imprisonment.
“You shall be registered as a sex offender with the Lagos state and also under go a mandatory counseling and you must have no direct and indirect contact with the victims family.” He added
The convict was accused of conspiracy to commit robbery, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit defilement of a 17 years old girl April 2019.
The defendant had pleaded not guilty when arraigned on June 20, 2022 to all counts.
Delivering the judgement, justice Rahman Oshodi had informed the court that the prosecuting counsel Olufunmilayo Aluko with the consent of the defence counsel Yusuf Onyebanji had entered a plea bargain agreement dated February 19,2025.
The prosecutor had earlier called one witness as regard to the matter. PW1 the survivors step father Lucky Adeyi.
PW1 in his testimony before the court that in 2019 the survivor was taking in cloths outside their residence where she was harmed by two individuals who forcefully took her to a near by filed.
The witness told the court that a child who alerted them about the incident prompted him to inform the police.
PW1 told the court that his wife was overwhelmed with the incident and trauma, which made her relocate to Kogi state with the survivor.
He confirmed to the court that he didn’t witness the incident, but the two suspects were apprehended by the police with firearms.
Alowonle admitted he made the plea bargain agreement with the advice of his counsel.
The defense counsel, Yusuf Onyebanji pleaded to the court to tamper justice with mercy in sentencing.
“My lord I plead to this court to tamper justice with mercy, since I came into this matter I have witness the remorsefulness of the defendant which made him apply for a plea bargain” he said.
