The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), has called upon the dedicated officers and personnel of the agency to remain steadfast and resolute in their ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and the challenges posed by drug-related activities.
This call to action was made on Saturday during the commissioning of newly constructed blocks of terrace flats intended for the personnel of the Zonal Command, the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Command, and the officers of the Strike Force Team deployed to Kano, as well as a rehabilitation facility.
In his remarks, Marwa highlighted that this commissioning serves as further evidence of President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of security personnel, including those within the NDLEA. “We recognize that the efficacy of our officers is not solely determined by their training and tools, but is equally influenced by the quality of their living conditions. A secure and comfortable home environment enhances morale, sharpens focus, and strengthens the resolve of those entrusted with the pivotal responsibility of protecting our society from the perils of illicit drugs,” he stated.
Reflecting on the recent achievements, Marwa noted that the first-ever NDLEA barrack in the agency’s 35-year history was inaugurated in Yola, Adamawa State, in February. He also announced the completion of another barrack in Abuja, which is set for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu, and mentioned that similar projects are underway in Enugu and Lagos.
He elaborated on the importance of providing decent accommodation for the agency’s workforce, emphasizing that “these structures represent more than mere buildings; they are symbols of peace, assurance, and respect. They embody the value we assign to our officers and affirm our enduring commitment to enhancing their standard of living. The challenges we face in this noble undertaking are substantial. The fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires immense courage, steadfast discipline, and a resilient sense of purpose. Improved living conditions serve to empower our officers—physically, mentally, and emotionally—to fulfill this vital mission.”
Marwa expressed his gratitude for the daily sacrifices made by NDLEA officers in their quest to eradicate illicit drugs from the country and encouraged them to remain undeterred in confronting the drug menace. “I would like to sincerely acknowledge and commend the dedication and diligence of all NDLEA officers serving in Kano. The achievements in arrests, seizures, and convictions over the past twelve months—both in quantity and quality—have been commendable.”
He underscored the critical role of Kano as a state with both an international border and an international airport, stressing that securing the territory against drug trafficking is of great significance. “Therefore, NDLEA officers in this region must continue to step up to the occasion. While we celebrate the progress achieved thus far, we are also optimistic for even greater results in the future.”
Marwa urged officers who will occupy the newly commissioned facilities to treat them with care and discipline, emphasizing that this event marks a significant milestone in the agency’s journey toward becoming a more resilient, community-oriented, and mission-driven organization. “Together, let us continue to foster an institution that exemplifies excellence, inspires loyalty, and consistently supports its personnel.”
He extended his heartfelt thanks to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support of the agency and expressed gratitude towards the numerous stakeholders who have aligned with the NDLEA in pursuit of its constitutional mandate. Additionally, Marwa took the opportunity to bestow the rank of Deputy Commander General of Narcotics (DCGN) upon Maryam Gambo Sani, the Zonal Commander of Zone 5 Command of the agency.
