The acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, conveyed the nation’s profound sorrow in the official statement. Pope Francis, the revered political leader of Vatican City and the head of the Catholic Church, was recognized as a global moral authority whose papacy exemplified humility, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to peace, social justice, and the dignity of every individual.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the vibrant Catholic community across the nation and joins the international community, especially Catholics worldwide, in mourning this tremendous loss,” the statement asserted. “Pope Francis’ unwavering advocacy for the marginalized—encompassing refugees, the impoverished, and victims of conflict—struck a profound chord in Nigeria, where his messages of interreligious harmony and solidarity offered hope in times of adversity.”
The statement also commended the Pope’s historic 2022 apology for the Church’s role in colonial injustices, particularly regarding the suffering of Indigenous peoples, highlighting it as a powerful example of reconciliation. His fervent commitment to peace in Africa and other global conflict zones reflected his universal pastoral mission and remains an inspiration.
