Nigeria has advanced its efforts to revitalize its steel industry through a high-level working visit to China, led by the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Mr. Joseph Tegbe, and the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu.
The visit aims to attract strategic development projects and strengthen industrial cooperation with key Chinese stakeholders.
As part of the mission, the Nigerian delegation held a strategic meeting with top executives of Sino Steel, one of China’s largest and most influential steel conglomerates.
Discussions focused on the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company, a critical industrial asset viewed as central to Nigeria’s manufacturing goals and job creation plans. The meeting covered key areas including technical assessments, operational models, and financing structures required to bring the facility back to full productivity.
A statement released on Wednesday by NCSP noted that earlier, Mr. Tegbe had met with the leadership of Jingye Steel, a prominent private Chinese steel manufacturer with a global presence.
The discussions explored opportunities to establish integrated steel mills in Nigeria—an essential move to boost domestic steel production and support sectors such as infrastructure, automotive manufacturing, and construction.
Following the meeting, Minister Audu led a Nigerian delegation on a tour of Jingye Steel’s production facilities in China’s Hebei province.
In Beijing, Mr. Tegbe also engaged with SYS Company, a firm specializing in water engineering and environmental solutions. Talks focused on deploying SYS’s advanced technologies in Nigeria, particularly for wastewater recycling and renewable energy generation.
The collaboration aims to support Nigeria’s environmental sustainability objectives and promote a circular economy that contributes to energy diversification.
Earlier in the trip, the NCSP Director-General held a follow-up meeting with executives of CSSC Haishen. This meeting built on a prior agreement between the Chinese company and CPL Ltd., a leading Nigerian medical and pharmaceutical equipment firm.
Discussions focused on securing competitive pricing for medical devices, enhancing knowledge transfer, providing operational support, and identifying financing mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of Nigeria’s healthcare modernization efforts.
According to the NCSP statement, these strategic engagements reflect its broader mission to foster transformative partnerships by leveraging China’s technological capabilities in alignment with Nigeria’s national development priorities. The goal is to deliver tangible outcomes across sectors including health, industry, infrastructure, and environmental innovation.
