The Akwa Ibom State Government has issued a directive for the immediate closure of nightclubs and brothels operating in hotels and private premises within the Ewet Housing Estate in Uyo.
This was contained in a statement by Barr. Patrick Udomfang, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Akwa Ibom Ibom Property and Investments Company (APICO), in Uyo on Wednesday.
He gave the operators of such businesses seven days to cease operations or face sanctions.
“To all operators of nightclubs in hotels and private properties, this directive is hereby given that such business is strictly prohibited.
“Nightclubs generate excessive noise, disturbing the peace and quietness of the area. Operations of nightclubs have promoted anti-social behaviours, compromising the environment’s integrity and breaching the conditions of allocation.
“Ewet Housing Estate, is a private residential area predominantly occupied by high–profile individuals, and as such, noise pollution from nightclubs will no longer be tolerated.
“Therefore, all hotel owners/operators are required to cease operations of Night Clubs immediately as noncompliance will be met with specific consequences,” Udomfang stressed.
Our correspondent reports that the government’s action may be linked to the rampant cases of noise pollution and social nuisances, including prostitution, in the area.
