The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of further entrenching Nigeria and its citizens in poverty while providing them with false statistics.
In a statement posted on his X page on Monday, Peter Obi asserted that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has become one of the world’s hungriest nations.
Obi recounted how Tinubu, during the 2023 presidential campaign, criticized him for regularly citing statistics.
He stated that, since taking office, Tinubu has been circulating false figures regarding Nigeria’s economic condition to conceal his administration’s failures.
He wrote: “In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC Presidential Candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other Presidential Candidate (Peter Obi), refusing to call my name, and said, ‘Na statistics we go chop, all I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.’
“Now, two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world, with millions of Nigerians unsure of where their next meal will come from.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with incorrect statistics—from false unemployment figures, inflated inflation rates, to distorted GDP figures—all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions.
“Governance is not rocket science; it’s not a gamble. As I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion.”
