Operatives of the Azikiwe Police Division, in collaboration with other tactical units, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, averted a violent cult clash between rival groups near a university in Rivers State.
The suspected confrontation involved members of the Klu Klux Klans (KKK) and the Vikings confraternity, who were reportedly engaged in a battle for supremacy and territorial control. The confrontation occurred along Opobolane/Azikiwe Street in Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt.
According to eyewitnesses, the rival cult groups ran into each other while one faction was allegedly on its way to the university campus to launch an attack. A gunfight erupted, causing panic in the area as business owners and passersby fled for safety.
Prompt intervention by operatives of the Azikiwe Police Division and the Octopus Strike Force led to the arrest of three suspects believed to be students. One of the suspects is said to be a final-year student of a university in the state.
The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident. She said the police recovered an English-made revolver pistol, one live round of ammunition, and three expended shells from the suspects’ possession.
“Three suspects were arrested. One English-made revolver pistol, one live ammunition, and three expanded ammunition were recovered from the suspects’ bag. Investigation is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the cult groups,” she stated.
Security operatives have assured residents and students of continued surveillance and a firm response to any cult-related activities in the state.
