Port Harcourt Protest Turns Violent as Police Disperse Demonstrators with Tear Gas
A peaceful protest in Port Harcourt turned chaotic after police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
As early as 8 a.m, members of the Take It Back Movement, Civil Society Organisations, and the Niger Delta Congress gathered at Isaac Boro Park, only to be confronted by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command.
Officers initially ordered the protesters to relocate to another venue, but the demonstrators refused, instead singing solidarity songs and marching toward Aba Express Road.
Upon reaching the CFC junction, armed anti-riot police intercepted them again, demanding they vacate the area. When the protesters stood their ground, officers responded by firing tear gas canisters, forcing the crowd—including journalists covering the event to scatter for safety.
The demonstrators listed key grievances, including demands for the repeal of the Cybercrime Act and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Despite the crackdown, the protesters vowed to regroup and continue their demonstrations at a later date, which they promised to announce soon.
