The Rivers State Government has acknowledged the recent advisory from the Federal Government identifying the state as one of the high-risk areas for potential flooding this year.
In response to the alert, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is deploying teams to Rivers State and other high-risk regions to sensitize residents on flood preparedness and mitigation strategies.
A statement by Hector Igbikiowubo, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), noted that the Rivers State Government fully supports the initiative and urges all residents, especially those in flood-prone communities, to take necessary precautions to protect lives and property.
The statement warned against illegal land reclamation, stressing that such activities pose serious environmental risks.
Residents were advised to clear blocked drainages, refrain from dumping waste in waterways, relocate from high-risk areas where necessary, cooperate with emergency response teams, and follow official safety advisories.
The government also encouraged the public to report any illegal land reclamation or environmental violations to the appropriate authorities.
