The popular annual Eta Festival of the Úpātá people in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State ended with a call on traditional rulers to strengthen cultural ties and take proactive steps in addressing insecurity.
His Royal Majesty, Felix Enene Otuwarikpo, the Úpātá III of Úpātá Kingdom, made the call during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Úpātá Wrestling Festival held at Edeoha Town, the administrative headquarters of the Úpātá people.
HRM Otuwarikpo emphasized the strategic role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, resolving conflicts, and supporting security efforts. He urged traditional rulers to go beyond their ceremonial roles and act as agents of stability within their communities.
Stressing the importance of preserving cultural heritage as a means of safeguarding identity passed down by ancestors, he warned individuals in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to the authorities or face serious consequences.
The event was graced by notable traditional rulers, including His Imperial Majesty, Eze Kelvin Ngozi Anugwo, Ekpeye Logbo III, Akalaka XII, who served as the royal father of the day and declared the wrestling festival open to loud cheers.
The one-day festival featured intense competition among top wrestlers and showcased various cultural activities, including colorful parades by wrestling groups, adding excitement and entertainment to the celebration.
