Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Security Officer Under Fire as JODER Condemns Journalist Harassment

By Emamuzo Iboma

The Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER) has strongly condemned the alleged harassment of journalists by Kunle Fagbemi, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In a statement released yesterday by JODER’s Executive Director, Adewale Adeoye, the organization voiced concern over a troubling pattern of hostility by aides of public officials toward journalists, which he attributed to inadequate training in media relations and democratic engagement.

“It is unfortunate that some aides to public officials see journalists as threats. This reflects poor training and a fundamental misunderstanding of the media’s role in a democratic society,” Adeoye stated.

He emphasized that journalists are vital links between the government and the people, and a robust, independent media is essential for democracy’s health.

“The CSO, Fagbemi, seems to have a poor understanding of the media’s role in nation-building. Modern security officers are expected to protect the governor and uphold democratic institutions, including the press,” he added.

Adeoye asserted that if the allegations are true, Fagbemi’s conduct is not only condemnable but also a disservice to the office of the governor.

“A well-trained CSO should recognize that their responsibility includes safeguarding democratic processes and institutions. If verified, these actions are shameful and undermine good governance,” he said.

He called on Governor Sanwo-Olu to organize regular training and retraining for his aides, especially the CSO, to foster better understanding of their roles within a democratic framework.

JODER reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and urged public officials and their aides to treat journalists with respect, recognizing them as essential stakeholders in democratic governance.
