A tragic lone-vehicle accident claimed the life of a female pedestrian earlier today at the Mosalasi Roundabout along New Ipaja Road in the Ipaja area of Lagos State. The incident involved a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was traveling at an excessively high speed when the driver lost control, veered off the main road, and mounted the pedestrian walkway. The car struck a woman, killing her instantly. The impact propelled the vehicle into a nearby property known for livestock sales, where it severely damaged the perimeter fence and an adjacent billboard.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who responded promptly. The suspect was handed over to security operatives from the Gowon Estate Police Command, who were also present at the scene.
The remains of the deceased were respectfully handed over to the Nigeria Police for necessary procedures. Authorities have confirmed that the driver is now in custody and undergoing thorough interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation.
Speaking on the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and offered condolences to the victim’s family.
“This is a deeply sorrowful event that highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving. We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray that the Almighty grants them strength in this difficult time,” he said.
Mr. Bakare-Oki also urged all motorists—both private and commercial—to conduct regular safety checks on their vehicles, especially the braking systems. He emphasized that adherence to traffic regulations is not just a legal duty but a moral responsibility to protect lives on the road.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a culture of road safety and enforcing traffic laws across the state.
