Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has called on member states to ensure the effective implementation of resolutions adopted during the 94th Ordinary Session of the Council held in Abuja.
Tuggar made the call in his closing remarks at the end of the two-day meeting, which brought together ambassadors, permanent representatives, ECOWAS commissioners, heads of institutions, and resident representatives to address key subregional issues.
Among the topics discussed was the need for stronger unity and enhanced economic exchange across the ECOWAS subregion to promote economic growth and shared prosperity.
The minister said the outcomes of the meeting marked a significant step toward achieving a more integrated and prosperous West Africa. “The conclusions reached during this meeting will no doubt contribute to the actualisation of the regional integration agenda of ECOWAS,” he said.
He urged member states to commit to implementing the adopted decisions and to support the recommendations made during the session. “It remains essential that we encourage our respective governments to faithfully implement the decisions we have adopted and to actively support the recommendations emerging from our discussions, pending approval by the Authority of Heads of State and Government on matters requiring such,” he added.
Tuggar noted that the resolutions reflect the Council’s collective resolve to tackle the pressing challenges facing the ECOWAS region. He commended the members for their dedication to the bloc’s core principles of regional cooperation, saying their efforts had been both impactful and inspiring.
“I convey my profound gratitude for your commitment, invaluable perspectives, and contributions to our deliberations over challenges that bear direct impact on the well-being of our citizens and the long-term quality of life in our member states,” he said.
He also praised the ECOWAS Commission for preparing the detailed working documents that guided the discussions and contributed to the success of the session. “I am confident that the high standard demonstrated during this session will continue to define our future interactions,” he stated.
Reflecting on his two-year tenure as Chairman of the Council, Tuggar expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation he received from fellow members. “This may be my last council session as chair. Over the last two years, I have enjoyed a very cordial working relationship with each one of you,” he said.
He expressed hope that the same spirit of cooperation would be extended to his successor in leading the Council forward.
