In commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, Edo State Governor His Excellency Monday Okpebholo has commended the unwavering commitment of journalists in the state and across the globe, acknowledging the indispensable role they play in promoting democracy, accountability, and social development.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo stressed that a vibrant and independent media is the bedrock of any democratic society.
He referred to journalists as “watchdogs of truth and the voice of the voiceless,” noting that their work empowers citizens with information necessary to make informed decisions and hold leaders accountable.
According to the statement, “Governor Okpebholo celebrates the courage and resilience of journalists in Edo who, despite challenging circumstances, continue to uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting.”
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to safeguarding press freedom, highlighting that freedom of expression is not a privilege but a constitutional right that must be protected.
He pledged to continue fostering an environment in which journalists can operate without fear, intimidation, or interference and freely express themselves while performing their duty.
While recognising the shifting media landscape and the growing threats of misinformation and disinformation, Governor Okpebholo urged media practitioners to maintain high ethical standards in their pursuit of truth and public enlightenment.
He reinstated his administration’s commitment to constructive engagement with the media, emphasizing the value of their partnership in building a better Edo State through transparency, dialogue, and mutual respect.
