Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has approved the release of N850 million for the purchase of pumps, accessories, and other components required for borehole rehabilitation and upgrade in Maiduguri and surrounding communities.
This is a part of a bold effort to restore access to drinkable water in the majority of the affected areas and alleviate the water shortage brought on by the devastating flood on September 10, 2024.
This was revealed to journalists in Maiduguri by Dr. Mohammed Aliyu, the general manager of the Borno State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA).
He stated: “The purchase of pumps, accessories, and other spare parts necessary for the renovation and repair of boreholes in Maiduguri and the surrounding area has been approved for a total of N850 million by His Excellency, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.” Deliveries of the necessary materials have already started from suppliers.
According to the GM, RUWASA has formed a Rapid Response Team whose job it is to examine and fix water infrastructure in areas affected by flooding.
According to him, the team will be sent to Maiduguri, Jere, Dikwa, Mafa, Gamboru Ngala, and other affected local government areas in order to locate and fix malfunctioning boreholes.
“We have constituted a Rapid Response Team that will commence operations immediately. They will evaluate every impacted area and make the required repairs. In close coordination with experts from the State Ministry of Water Resources and other pertinent fields, the team is anticipated to finish the evaluation in two weeks,” Aliyu continued.
In order to improve access to drinkable water, Governor Zulum has also authorized the construction of more waterworks in a number of communities throughout the state.
New facilities will be built in the towns of Zarmari, Shaukari, Gubio, Gajiganna, Gajiram, Kaleri, and Mafa, Aliyu declared.
He stated, “This initiative builds upon previous achievements by the Zulum administration, which has already completed waterworks projects in Ngarannam in Maiduguri Metropolis, Moramti-Konduga Local Government, Azare in Hawul Local Government, and Pulka, Chibok, and Azare in Hawul Local Government.”
