On Tuesday, Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum inaugurated the construction of a 7.1-kilometer terminus junction for the Molai Express Road, complete with a 6-span bridge and the state’s fourth flyover along Maiduguri’s busy Post Office area.
The projects, which are intended to address rising vehicular traffic, aim to provide a continuous route for commuters and goods while also significantly improving access to key economic zones, schools, and healthcare facilities.
The projects are expected to create hundreds of jobs for skilled and unskilled workers, contributing to the state’s economic recovery and resilience efforts. They are expected to be completed within 8 to 10 months.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 7.1-kilometer terminus-Molai express road along Tashan Kano, Zulum said, “In continuation of our urban renewal programme, this morning we are here to flag off the construction of a 7.1-kilometer dual carriageway from Borno express terminal to Molai, as well as the construction of an additional bridge downstream of the road.”
He went on to say, “What we are doing is not just for beauty, but also to accommodate Maiduguri’s growing population.” We must expand the city.”
Meanwhile, Zulum charged contractors for all projects to ensure strict compliance with quality specifications.We must expand the city.
“Ten months is ten months, the total contract value is 16 billion, and we have paid half of that amount. Thus, there is no justification for the contractor to postpone the project. Zulum stated, “We have also set aside the remaining 8 billion to be paid when due.”
Engr. Mustapha Gubio, the Works and Housing Commissioner, also spoke and emphasized that the purpose of the 6-span bridge is to connect the new road on both sides of the Ngada-Bul River.
The ministry will diligently monitor the projects and guarantee adherence to the contract specifications, the commissioner also acknowledged.
A western bypass, an international hotel, a new market, an orthopaedic hospital, and another general hospital are among the five major projects the governor has announced thus far.
The governor, who announced the five projects and numerous other developmental services in Maiduguri on Tuesday, promised that they would be completed before the end of his term.
He stated: “We intend to build a suitable additional market, an orthopaedic hospital, another General Hospital, an international hotel, and a western bypass.” These are some of the major projects I intend to complete before my tenure expires. Most importantly, completing all current projects.”
The governor also expressed concern about the acute water shortage in Maiduguri Metropolis and surrounding communities, which he blamed on the destruction caused by the flood disaster in September 2024.
Nonetheless, he urged citizens to remain calm and reassured them that the state government is dedicated to solving the issue. He stated, “The city is experiencing a severe water shortage as a result of the flood that occurred last year damaging the Maiduguri water supply network. We are making every effort to finish the repairs on schedule.
In addition, he said: “I want to appeal to the people of the city.” The government is fully cognizant of the situation, and we are making every effort to resolve it.
