Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has given working tools to 150 almajirai students who were trained in vocational skills by his administration.
The training included various trades such as electrical installation and repair, solar installation and repair, leatherwork, welding, carpentry, and building construction.
This program also offers cash support to help the participants begin their trades and contribute to the development of their communities.
The goal is to improve individual skills, uplift communities, and give almajirai sustainable paths to financial independence.
In his speech, Governor Zulum highlighted that his administration will keep creating opportunities for almajiri learners to secure a better future.
He stated, “By participating in this training program, you have taken an important step towards your future. With these new skills, you can turn your dreams into reality.
“As the Governor of Borno State, I promise you that our Government is fully dedicated to supporting Sangaya Islamic education. We will keep investing in Sangaya educational resources so every learner has access to quality teaching and learning materials.”
Zulum also voiced his concerns about the increasing incidents of child abuse disguised as Islamic education.
He remarked, “I want to take this chance to discuss a serious issue: the safety and well-being of our Sangaya learners. I firmly commit that the Borno State Government will not accept any form of abuse or violence, such as beating, against any Almajiri. Each one of you, no matter your background, deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.”
“Our dedication to protecting children goes beyond just the Almajiri; it includes all kids. We need to join forces to make sure our community welcomes every child without bias. This promise is more than just words; it’s a call for action for all parents, teachers, and community leaders to defend the rights of our Sangaya learners.”
Earlier, the chairman of the Borno Sangaya Board, Kalifa Aliyu Abdulfatahi, mentioned that the program was launched in 2023 as part of Zulum’s effort to tackle the issues faced by almajiri children, who typically attend Islamic schools and often miss out on formal education and opportunities.
Sheikh Kalifa pointed out that the training was set up in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Board.
Additionally, the state Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, represented by the Special Adviser in the ministry, Dr. Bukar Tijjani, stated that beyond the training, the ministry had teamed up with colleges, including the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies, to offer certification for almajiri learners.
Zulum was joined by members of the House of Representatives, Engr Bukar Talba and Hon Usman Zannah, along with the State APC Chairman, Hon Bello Ayuba, and the Shehu of Borno, among other important guests.
