Kaduna State Police Command has issued a stern warning, prohibiting supporters of 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi from organizing an unauthorized political rally in the state.
In a statement over the weekend, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Mansir Hassan revealed that credible intelligence reports indicated plans by Obi’s supporters to hold a rally in his honor. However, authorities cited serious concerns over potential security threats.
The police explained that the ban is necessary because intelligence suggests that criminal elements may attempt to infiltrate and hijack the rally to incite violence, cause disruptions, and threaten public peace. The timing also coincides with upcoming party primaries scheduled by INEC, raising fears of clashes and unrest.
While respecting citizens’ rights to political expression, the police emphasized that all political rallies and gatherings remain suspended across Kaduna until authorized by electoral authorities. They also warned organizers to suspend any planned events to prevent hijacking and ensure public safety.
The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property and warned that legal action will be taken against anyone violating the directive. They appealed to the public’s cooperation in maintaining peace and order in the state.
