By Tracy Ohovwore

The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to economic empowerment initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of civil and public servants. This includes exploring a partnership with the Lift Above Poverty Organization Microfinance Bank (LAPO MfB), a financial institution with deep roots in the state.

Speaking during a meeting with LAPO officials at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, highlighted the state’s strong belief in homegrown solutions. He described the proposed partnership with LAPO as a step toward financial inclusion and support for workers across the state.

According to Dr. Okungbowa, Governor Okpebholo prioritizes indigenous initiatives that reflect the values and needs of the local community, noting that LAPO’s origin and reputation in Edo make it a natural ally for public sector support programs.

He assured LAPO of the state’s backing, while urging the institution to keep its financial products competitive and impactful. He emphasized that beyond business, what matters most is the positive impact on workers’ lives.

The Head of Service also praised the credibility and integrity of LAPO’s founder, stating that the institution’s values and consistent performance make it a trusted partner.

In response, LAPO’s Head of Communication, Mr. Oluremi Akande, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Edo State workers. He noted that LAPO’s services are tailored to meet the needs of civil and public servants, offering accessible and affordable credit facilities.

Akande highlighted LAPO’s broader contributions to community development, including the award of over 3,000 scholarships and vocational training for more than 1,500 individuals, many of whom are from Edo State. He described the renewed partnership as part of LAPO’s continued mission to empower grassroots communities and strengthen public-private collaboration in advancing social and economic well-being.
