The Lagos State Government has commenced a strict enforcement operation against articulated vehicles violating the ban on using the Third Mainland Bridge, impounding more than ten trucks during a weekend operation.
The move is part of efforts to enhance public safety, preserve the structural integrity of the bridge, and ensure strict compliance with state traffic laws.
Speaking during the launch of the operation, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, said the enforcement followed months of public sensitization and stakeholder engagement.
“The Third Mainland Bridge is legally out of bounds for certain categories of articulated vehicles. Offenders will face immediate penalties. Enforcement by LASTMA officers has begun in full and will be carried out without exception,” Giwa stated.
To bolster compliance and strengthen monitoring, the government has deployed high-definition speed cameras along the bridge for real-time surveillance.
“These advanced surveillance tools are critical to our road safety strategy, helping to prevent structural stress and encouraging responsible usage of one of our most vital transport corridors,” he explained.
The Third Mainland Bridge, recently rehabilitated, is a key link between the Lagos Mainland and the Island’s commercial centers. Authorities have warned that continued misuse by heavy vehicles—particularly those exceeding nine tonnes—poses a serious threat to the bridge’s stability and public safety.
Traffic laws already prohibit articulated trucks from accessing major bridges during peak hours to reduce congestion and protect infrastructure.
“This is not a punitive exercise but a necessary one aimed at safeguarding lives and extending the lifespan of our infrastructure,” Giwa added.
He also issued a clear warning to freight and logistics operators, stressing that the grace period for compliance is over.
“Any truck caught violating this regulation will be impounded and sanctioned immediately,” he warned.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified patrols along the bridge and its access routes to ensure strict enforcement. The initiative aligns with the state’s THEMES+ development agenda, which prioritizes transportation and traffic management.
The government has appealed to the public and all logistics operators to cooperate fully with the new measures, emphasizing that the operation is designed to serve the best interests of all Lagosians.
