The Bayelsa State Police Command has successfully apprehended the kidnappers responsible for abducting Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa High Court. The judge was kidnapped on June 21 in Yenagoa and held for 12 days before being rescued through coordinated efforts by security agencies in the state.
Governor Douye Diri announced the arrests on Wednesday, July 23, during a state executive council meeting at Government House, Yenagoa. During the event, he also commended Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi for his courageous refusal of a $17,000 bribe offered by a suspect involved in organ harvesting.
A statement from Chief Press Secretary Daniel Alabrah revealed that all those involved in the kidnapping, except the gang leader who remains at large, have been detained.
Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s firm stance against crime, emphasizing that Bayelsa is committed to a zero-tolerance policy. He highlighted recent security enhancements, including the deployment of drones and the installation of CCTV cameras across the state capital, to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
“Our improved use of technology played a crucial role in rescuing the kidnapped judge unharmed,” Diri stated. “We provided security agencies with necessary logistics, and in the end, all suspects involved in the crime were arrested—except for the gang leader still at large. Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime and criminality.”
He praised the security agencies for their dedication, especially SP Obi, whose bravery and integrity earned him national recognition. The governor awarded Obi a three-bedroom flat and a car, honoring his exemplary conduct and contribution to the fight against crime.
“SP Obi has brought pride to Bayelsa and the Nigerian Police Force,” Diri said. “His integrity reflects positively on our state, and I urge other officers to follow his shining example.”
On behalf of the government, Diri also called for the Inspector General of Police to consider promoting Obi in recognition of his gallantry and dedication.
Police Commissioner Francis Idu lauded Obi’s professionalism, calling him one of the most dedicated officers in the state. He emphasized the need for increased investment in security infrastructure to better protect lives and property.
