The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Business, Trade and Cooperatives (MBTC), in collaboration with the Edo Cooperatives Federation, joined the global commemoration of the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, themed “Cooperatives Build a Better World.”
The event which took place at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City had Governor Monday Okpebholo, represented by the State Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa who reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting cooperatives as vital instruments for poverty reduction, job creation, and wealth generation, objects in line with President Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
Speaking at the occasion, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, outlined the Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme (RH-CRRP).
The programme includes a suite of initiatives: regulatory reforms, the establishment of a cooperative-specific bank and development fund, creation of a national database linked to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), capacity-building efforts, and strengthened partnerships, all aimed at repositioning cooperatives as key players in national development.
Permanent Secretary of the MBTC, Barr. (Mrs.) Felicia N. Edokpolor, restated the ministry’s role in fostering an enabling environment for cooperative growth.
Meanwhile, the Director of Cooperatives, Mrs. Efeomo Enoma, in her presentation titled, “Cooperatives and Retirement,” outlined strategies to help members attain financial stability post-retirement.
The celebration also marked the 103rd International Cooperative Day and the 31st United Nations observance.
Highlights of the occasion, included exhibitions, expert panel discussions, and awards recognising innovation and excellence within cooperative societies.
