The Nigeria Police Force has assured the family of late Osaiyekemwen Ugbo and the general public that justice will be served following his reported death under tragic and suspicious circumstances in Abuja earlier this month.
Ugbo was said to have died in unclear circumstances in the Federal Capital Territory, sparking concern among family members and the public over the need for a thorough investigation.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, gave the assurance in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem. According to the statement, the police command is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that all those found culpable are brought to book.
“The commissioner of police wishes to unequivocally assure the bereaved family and the general public that this command does not treat matters of this nature with levity. Every necessary step is being taken to ensure that justice is served and that anyone found culpable is made to face the full weight of the law,” the statement read.
The command, however, noted that preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged crime did not occur within Edo State jurisdiction.
Despite this, it assured that due diligence would be applied in handling the case to ensure that all relevant evidence is properly gathered and assessed.
The statement further disclosed that the case would be transferred to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution, in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the police reiterated its commitment to protecting lives, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that perpetrators of criminal acts are brought to justice.
The command also urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and allow due process to take its course as investigations continue.
