The Edo State Police Command has arrested 95 suspected cultists in a major crackdown on cult-related violence across Benin City and its environs.
It was noted that the operation lasted for a week and also led to the recovery of two locally made pistols, one single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges.
Following a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the suspects are believed to be members of the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities — groups notorious for violent clashes and supremacy battles in the state.
Commissioner of Police CP Monday Agbonika, FDC, warned youths against joining unlawful societies that could jeopardise their future and endanger their lives.
He added that parents and guardians should be very careful about whatever activities their wards are engaging in, reminding the effectiveness of early intervention in reversing youth involvement in cultism.
Moving on, 64 arrested suspects have been charged in court and remanded in custody, while investigations continue on the remaining individuals.
The Edo Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to rid the state of criminal elements and maintain peace and order while urging residents to be at alert.
