Vice Admiral Ibas Appoints Administrator For 23 LGAs In Rivers

Vice Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, the Administrator of Rivers State, has approved the appointment of administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas in the state. The new appointees include Mr. Okroiyobi Animiete for Abua/Odual, Mr. Goodluck M. Ihenacho for Ahoada East, and Dr. Sam Kalagbor for Port Harcourt. Additionally, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission has also received new members, with Dr. Micheal Ekpai Odey appointed as Chairman. All appointments are effective from April 7, 2025.

The Rivers State Police Commissioner has condemned the assault on journalists during a recent protest, confirming that an investigation is underway. SP Grace Iringe Koko, spokesperson for the Commissioner, stated that some personnel have been identified and are currently being questioned. The Police Commissioner emphasized the importance of journalists in promoting peace and development and assured the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) that the matter would be handled seriously. “Upon the conclusion of the investigation, the findings and measures will be made public,” Koko said.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State, has fired back at the state’s police command after officers brutalized journalists covering a protest in Port Harcourt.

Reporters from Channels TV, AIT, Naija FM, Super FM, and Nigeria Info were tear-gassed, manhandled, and one even arrested in what the NUJ slammed as a “barbaric, inhumane attack on press freedom.”

In a fiery statement, the NUJ issued a 14-day ultimatum demanding a public apology and disciplinary action against the officers involved—or the press will go dark on all police coverage in Rivers.

“If they fail to act, we’ll silence them where it hurts—in the media,” the union declared.
